Danbro, the award-winning specialist accountancy firm for contract and freelance workers, has supported another prestigious recruitment industry event by sponsoring a drinks reception hosted by the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) at the House of Commons.
The event took place on Tuesday, 20 October, and was attended by shadow business minister Jonathan Djanogly MP, providing an opportunity for people working in the recruitment industry to share their views on the controversial Agency Workers Directive (AWD).
The EU ruling aims to ensure agency workers receive the same rates of pay and benefits as permanent staff, but some have argued that it could discourage firms from taking on temporary staff as they emerge from recession. The directive has to be implemented by 2011, but unions are calling for it to be brought in earlier.
APSCo chief executive Anne Swain used the event to share some of her members' concerns about the proposal and was backed by Mr Djanogly who vowed to continue pressing the government on the matter.
The event also provided an opportunity for attendees to network and share ideas with one another, both on the AWD and other issues affecting the industry.
Danbro managing partner Damian Broughton said: "I'm delighted Danbro could offer its support by sponsoring the drinks reception, and it's great that some MPs are recognising the important role played by contract and freelance staff.
"The good news is that there is a delay in the implementation of the AWD to 1 October 2011, and that it will not apply to all those who are 'genuinely self employed', including limited company contractors and those who work through managed service contracts. There is also possible good news in the knowledge that if the Conservatives win the next election they will have a 'total review from top to bottom' of this and other regulation that affects this industry.
"However, the changes that may be required around how Umbrella companies, workers and agencies work together will need to be carefully considered. We will have to wait for the final detail, agreed after further consultation finishes on 11 December, on how the AWD is to be implemented, to decide on any changes that may be required to minimise any negative impact."
Danbro became an affiliate member of APSCo in February, and also sponsored the drinks reception at the organisation's members' conference, which took place on 7 October.
